Stafford Superintendent Leaving for Montgomery County

- June 17, 2024

Thomas Taylor has been selected to lead the 15th-largest school division in the country.

Stafford County Public Schools superintendent Thomas Taylor will be leaving the county to take over leadership of Montgomery County Public Schools this fall.

Taylor’s resignation from Stafford County will be effective July 1.

He was hired by the School Board in November of 2021 and has led Stafford schools “with distinction … [overseeing] significant advancements in staffing, salaries, and educational opportunities for all students,” the division wrote in a press release issued Monday afternoon.

His predecessor, Scott Kizner, resigned in January of 2021 and was hired in 2018.

Taylor’s achievements, according to the press release, include implementing staffing standards and improvements to the teacher salary scale, beginning construction of three new school buildings and the rebuild of Drew Middle School, planning for specialty high schools and a lab partnership school to increase opportunities for students, and establishing many community partnerships.

“It has been an honor to serve Stafford County,” Taylor said in the press release. “The school division has made significant progress in a short period of time, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. I would like to thank the School Board, students, staff, and community for allowing me to serve this great county.”

The School Board will a search process for a new superintendent immediately.
