12 People – Including Students – Arrested at UMW

Twelve people, including nine University of Mary Washington students, were arrested earlier this evening on initial charges of trespassing and transported to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, according to a source with knowledge of the proceedings.

Law enforcement from the UMW and Fredericksburg City police departments, as well as state police, were on campus this evening to carry out the arrests.

State police were there to assist, according to Brent Coffey, a spokesman for the VSP.

Fredericksburg Police Department spokeswoman Sarah Morris told the Advance on Saturday that city police “played a supporting role in the arrest of UMW students last night by transporting four individuals to the Rappahannock Regional Jail.”

Morris said the University of Mary Washington police department “obtained and charged those who were found to be trespassing.”

The students, who are associated with the university’s Students for Justice in Palestine, set up an encampment on campus yesterday in solidarity with protest movements happening across the country.

UMW has not yet responded to requests for information.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
