72% of respondents think devices should be banned during the school day.
The results of a survey distributed to the Caroline County school community indicate support for restricting student cell phone use during the instructional day.
Division staff presented a first read of a new policy prohibiting student use of personal communication devices at last month’s School Board meeting and a survey about student cell phone use went out to the school community between June 13 and June 24.
Of the 598 responses, almost three-quarters supported a complete ban on cell phone use during the school day, including during lunch and class transitions.
Slightly over half support the implementation of one consistent policy for elementary and secondary students.
The top three reasons given for permitting student cell phone use were in case of an emergency (almost 66%), to communicate with parents and guardians after school (65%), and for entertainment on the bus to and from school (almost 60%).
Almost 93% of those who responded were secondary students or parents of secondary students. About 3% of the respondents were students and 78% were parents or guardians.
The survey results will be presented at the July 8 School Board meeting.
