In addition to multiple school-based events, Stafford County Public Schools is inviting the community to two showcases celebrating Black History Month.
North Stafford High School will present its annual Black Excellence Celebration, and Brooke Point High School will debut a new event, titled “A Journey Through Black Excellence.”
Both events will feature vendor fairs showcasing local Black-owned businesses and nonprofit organizations, student performances, and inspirational speakers.
Brooke Point’s inaugural event will be held on February 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $8 per person and benefit the Black Student Union.
North Stafford High School’s event will take place on February 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or in advance for $5 per person, with proceeds also benefitting the school’s Black Student Union.
In a press release from the school division, Stafford School Board Vice Chair Maya Guy said that “highlighting the achievements of African Americans serves as an opportunity to inspire students, providing them with role models and empowering them to set high goals for themselves.”
“Additionally, I hope that seeing a Black woman serving in a leadership role on the school board empowers other members of our community to pursue their dreams,” Guy said.
Division superintendent Thomas Taylor encouraged the community to “embrace the opportunity to celebrate our shared community.”
“By proclaiming and celebrating Black History Month, we contribute to the promotion of unity, understanding, and respect within our diverse school community,” Taylor said.
