In this presidential election year, when there is significant discontent with our health insurance system—unaffordable healthcare is second only to inflation of the issues most voters want the candidates to talk about, and 3 out of 4 Americans across the country worry about being able to pay their medical bills if they get sick—it looks like both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are struggling on how best to resolve the most important problems that have plagued our current system for decades.

Unaffordable costs; staggering numbers of dollars ($600 billion each year – see here and here and here) wasted on needless administrative costs; the control, via prior authorizations, outright denials of care, or restricted networks of providers, that the largely for-profit health insurance industry has over our healthcare; and the unconscionable number (70,000 – see here and here) of Americans who die each.

Building first housed a church and later was a community gathering place for Black citizens during segregation.

The building at 1103 Winchester Street has been an important gathering place for Black residents of the Fredericksburg area since the late 1800s—as a church, a “canteen” for “colored children,” and a USO site for Black soldiers during World War II.

According to research conducted in 2017 by Roger Engels for the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation’s marker program, the property was initially part of the Kenmore estate and was sold to George and Albert Ray, Black residents of the city, in 1874.

Albert Ray was a teacher in segregated schools in Fredericksburg and Falmouth and he ran for City Council in 1876. He was also a pastor and the leader of a group that split from Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) and formed Second Baptist Church in.

A raucous crowd, sharp divisions over abortion, and military backgrounds play prominent role in debate between Derrick Anderson and Eugene Vindman.

The two men trying to succeed Democrat Abigail Spanberger in Congress went after each other last night in a debate in Fredericksburg, with abortion and the economy the main topics.

Share

Democrat Eugene Vindman, a retired Army colonel who fled from Soviet Ukraine as a child, is taking on Republican Derrick Anderson, a former Green Beret from Spotsylvania County who served multiple tours in Afghanistan.

Both men focused on their military backgrounds time and again during the 75-minute debate at University of Mary Washington’s Dodd Auditorium. And both often used the same rhetoric and arguments heard from the top of their respective tickets in the presidential race on the major issues.

On numerous occasions during the debate, Anderson, who had worked as an attorney in the office of National Drug Policy during the Trump administration, attacked Vindman for supporting the “same old failed policies of the Harris-Biden administration.”

He also said inflation and the current state of the economy are all tied to the cost of energy and the Harris-Biden administration’s energy policy.

Anderson also said Vindman keeps looking back at failed policies and wants revenge against former President Donald Trump.

Throughout the evening, he consistently called the Biden-Harris administration, as is typical, the “Harris-Biden administration.”

Vindman gained national attention when he testified before Congress during the impeachment.
